There’s one “inspirational” viral video I’m completely sick of seeing and will be happy to never see again.
When I heard sounds for the first time on my new hearing aids, I was like “oh uhh that’s what sounds are like? wtf? doesn’t make any sense.” Sounds I hear using hearing aids are blurry and indistinguishable, like static tv. Over time, it became really annoying for me to have sounds blasting without knowing what the hell it means.
For many of us deaf people, it’s not a HUGE deal. There’s a huge difference between hearing sounds (like many deafies, I can hear extremely loud noises w/o hearing aids) and understanding them.
And these videos are dangerous since it gives a false impression that deaf people, when hearing sounds for the first time, are able to instantly recognize the different noises and able to find words and sentences in mass of sounds. If you want that, you’d have to do years and years of grueling speech therapy. Without any guarantee that way down the road you’ll be able to understand.
